What are "Bank's Buy Rate" and "Bank's Sell Rate"?

The "Bank's Buy Rate" is the rate at which the bank will buy US Dollars (USD) from you in exchange for Ethiopian Birr (ETB). The "Bank's Sell Rate" is the rate at which the bank will sell USD to you. Typically, the buy rate is lower than the sell rate.

What do "Best Buy", "Best Sell", and "Lowest Spread" mean?

Best Buy Rate: This is the highest rate at which a bank will buy a foreign currency from you (e.g., USD for ETB). If you're selling foreign currency, a higher buy rate is better. Best Sell Rate: This is the lowest rate at which a bank will sell a foreign currency to you. If you're buying foreign currency, a lower sell rate is better. Lowest Spread: The "spread" is the difference between the buy and sell rates. A smaller spread is generally more favorable for the customer as it indicates a more competitive exchange rate.

How often are these rates updated?

Rates are fetched in real-time. Note: many banks publish FX rates once per day, but we refresh frequently so you always see the latest available.

Why are some rates missing on weekends and holidays?

Ethiopian banks, including the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), do not publish new foreign exchange rates on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) or Ethiopian public holidays. When rates are not available for a specific date, the frontend displays the most recent available rate from the previous business day. This is standard practice across Ethiopian financial institutions.
