How to read these rates

Retail prices for Ethiopian food staples, published by the World Food Programme Price Database and distributed by HDX. Each figure is the price at one named market on the date shown, in Ethiopian birr, quoted in the unit the source publishes, which for most staples is 100 KG, for coffee and sugar is the kilogram, and for livestock is the head. A commodity price is a single price per market rather than a bank buy and sell rate, so these are listed separately from the exchange rates.

What is the price of teff in Ethiopia today?

The table above lists white teff and mixed teff per 100 KG at every market WFP reports, with the lowest and highest market prices side by side. Teff is quoted per 100 KG rather than per kilogram because that is the unit WFP publishes, and the price differs sharply from one market to the next, so the market name matters as much as the number.Link to this section

Why is the newest price date not today?

The World Food Programme collects and republishes these prices roughly once a month, and the file is usually several weeks behind by the time we download it. The date shown is the last day WFP actually published. A monthly price cannot be re-dated to today without inventing a number, so we show the real date and how many days old it is.Link to this section

Why do the same crops have different prices?

Because they are different markets. WFP records one price per market rather than a national average, and transport costs, local supply and demand, and conflict all push prices apart. The lowest and highest columns show that spread, each labelled with the market it came from, so a single national figure is never presented as the whole picture.Link to this section
