The send-money comparison on exchange.et ranks the main ways to send money to Ethiopia by the approximate Birr a recipient receives for a ~USD 1,000 transfer. This page explains exactly how that comparison is computed, so the numbers are transparent and reproducible.
This page is available in English and Amharic.
Four levers decide who delivers the most Birr: (1) exchange-rate markup versus the mid-market rate, (2) the fee, (3) speed, and (4) delivery options in Ethiopia. The "most Birr" figure is computed from a provider's indicative fee and rate markup applied against the app's own reference rate, never from memory or search snippets.
Every ≈ ETB figure in the table is computed against a single reference rate: the best eligible USD/ETB bank buy rate from exchange.et's own live rate feed. It is selected by the same unified eligibility path as the homepage hero and Best Rate Finder, a commercial bank with a fresh effective date, never a quarantined, crossed, scheduled, or stale-capture row. When the live feed is unreachable, the page falls back to an indicative constant and clearly labels the figures as indicative.
The figures are indicative, not live quotes. Provider fees and rate markups are compiled from provider-published pricing, and the "last verified" date is derived from the live rates' capture time. Always confirm the final "recipient gets" amount on the provider before sending, because rates change daily and by corridor, payout method, and promotion.
A "best / fastest / cheapest" winner is only named when every ranked provider is actually listed. When a ranked provider is missing, for example a provider whose affiliate link is not yet configured, the comparison is incomplete, no winner is named, and a notice explains that the rows should be compared directly.
Some rows can never win a badge. Unregulated providers such as crypto P2P are informational only and are never marked best rate, fastest, or cheapest. "Coming soon" rows that a visitor cannot yet use are never crowned. And sponsorship is presentation-only: affiliate or paid placement never moves a provider up the ranking.
This comparison is currently backed by the best eligible USD/ETB bank buy rate of ≈ ETB 161.73 (Wegagen), last verified Aug 22, 2026.
The comparison is currently incomplete: some ranked providers are not listed, so no "best / fastest / cheapest" winner is named.
